You think you were born into an era of enlightenment. You think your ancestors suffered under shamans and charlatans, but you enjoy the fruits of centuries of science. I understand this belief. When we got our chemistry textbooks in high school, there weren’t a thousand blank pages in the back labeled “ALL OF THE CHEMISTRY WE HAVE YET TO DISCOVER.” The text went right to the back cover, as if that’s all the chemistry there is and will ever be.
Such a good quote and WOW, that whole article is incredible. I'd heard Adam on a podcast, but maybe never actually read his stuff? Well, that officially convinced me to subscribe. Thanks for sharing!
(And more to your general point: Yep, I agree with him!)
"Then shalt thou count to [one], no more, no less. [One] shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be [one[. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two [...] Five is right out!"
Okay, but actually: I checked 'The Official Bylaws of 1' and they say that I have to share the 1 best insight I find each week (and also, less than 1 minute)... but no regulations against sharing additional ideas. But I will continue to research and see if I can get you any restitution or recompense.
Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions makes this point from the history of science. We tend to have a naive view of scientific progress.
Thanks for the tip! It looks like he popularized the idea of the 'paradigm shift'!? Super interesting. And yes, it seems like Asimov is almost taking an 'end of history' type of stance: "We did it! We finally figured it all out."

But now you’ve given me TWO things for the week.
That’s too many things!
The title 1 is wrong (though less wrong than it could have been - imagine if there had been 3 things - or 0!)

Yes, he was using the language of "paradigm shifts" in the 60s before it became a cool thing for youth pastors to talk about in the 90s! 😂
