In Julian Shapiro’s latest newsletter, he talks about his search for what makes a good storyteller. After examining some technical elements (pacing, vocal variation, etc), he ultimately settles on two components: “blowing your own mind” (his way of saying “relive the experience as you tell the story”) and “imagine yourself smiling from ear to ear while talking.” But I think it’s simpler than that: Good storytelling comes down to relationships. The tactics Julian describes are simply hints at the underlying importance of establishing a real connection with your audience. Successfully relating a story to your audience depends on actually relating with your audience. Empathizing with those people—whether speaking, writing, or some other format—is the key. Do you agree? What are your criteria for a good storyteller?

I've given my fair share of presentations to peers and prospects but my best story telling seems to be with the new grandbabies. I seem to relate better to two-year-olds than peers within my 35-year career.
