1, #3 - A Framework for Multidisciplinary Thinking
On mental models — Estimated Read Time: 34 seconds.
Mental models are the frameworks we use to make sense of the world. By learning new models, we can substantially improve the way we think. But rather than trying to find the best individual models, the key is to develop what Berkshire Hathaway mogul Charlie Munger called “a latticework of theory.” The important thing is a network of models and the variety of their sources. In his extensive discussion on this topic, Shane Parrish points out that most of us have just a few models from our field or discipline or occupation—and that leaves us with blind spots. To avoid this, we can take the multidisciplinary approach of learning core frameworks from other areas like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Microeconomics. What mental models do you rely on most? What discipline could you study to provide balance to your own field’s perspective?
