1, #10 - How people will remember you
On Funerals and Achievements — Estimated Read Time: 39 seconds.
“Before you are old, attend as many funerals as you can bear, and listen. Nobody talks about the departed’s achievements. The only thing people will remember is what kind of person you were while you were achieving.” I recently reread Kevin Kelly’s popular post “68 Bits of Unsolicited Advice.” It’s so insight-dense, I could probably spend the next year of this newsletter just sending one out every week. But this one hit the hardest. Achievements do matter, but how they shape your identity and your relationships matters more. So this year, I challenge you: Think about how you want to be remembered. Then, let that identity determine what you’ll achieve, instead of letting what you achieve determine your identity.
Insight inspired by: Kevin Kelly. The list post has been replaced with information about the forthcoming book version: Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I'd Known Earlier. Preorder it!
